ANALYSIS
Madrid, October 10, 2026. For the Spanish press, the announcement made on Friday, October 9, by Donald Trump on his Truth Social network is first and foremost part of the US electoral calendar. Expansión writes that the president "seems willing to do anything to lower the price of diesel," which has reached historic highs in the United States, ahead of the legislative elections on November 3. The newspaper recalls that he had previously threatened to ban exports to force the G7 to release its reserves and reduce diesel taxation.
The volumes are repeated as Trump stated them: more than 300,000 tonnes "immediately", 500,000 tonnes in November, one million "immediately after", and three million "depending on the state of their refineries". HuffPost España considers this last clause to be a "veiled reference" to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. The site also specifies that the "total control" of the Strait of Hormuz claimed by Trump is nuanced: the passage is "actually blocked by Iran", with Washington controlling only the surrounding areas. Expansión notes that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had claimed, a few hours earlier, to have attacked a ship.
HuffPost points out that Trump has described the agreement as "transcendental" and made lowering prices his priority, "especially for our large farmers, ranchers, and truckers". He adds that Vladimir Putin has confirmed the agreement and his willingness to supply oil and petroleum products to the American and global markets, according to the Kremlin.
The Ukrainian dimension is highlighted by elDiario.es, which headlines with a Putin coming "to Trump's rescue" ahead of the elections. The media cites Volodymyr Zelensky, for whom the agreement is "unfair" and "unworthy of an ally": while the Ukrainian team was talking to the American team in Florida, Trump was meeting with "the leader of this aggression". Zelensky estimates that the revenue from diesel exported to the United States will go to finance the war. elDiario.es places the announcement after the signing, on September 18, of a series of sanctions against Russia, which highlights the contrast between the two gestures.
The three articles retain the same thread: a president who subordinates the firm line towards Moscow to a domestic purchasing power objective. The Spanish coverage extensively quotes Trump and Zelensky, but does not provide independent figures on the actual capacity of Russian refineries to deliver these volumes.
