On 1 September 2026, John Ternus, 51, took over as chief executive of Apple, ending Tim Cook's fifteen-year tenure, during which the share price rose by roughly 2,300%. A hardware engineer by background, he arrives ahead of a major launch — including a foldable iPhone — and at a time when the company is seen as lagging on artificial intelligence. He opened a Weibo account within hours.

Iceland rejects resuming EU accession talks, with Reykjavik voting against the rest of the country

On 29 August 2026 Icelanders voted in a referendum on resuming EU accession talks, suspended since 2013. The final figures give 118,040 votes to no against 105,339 to yes — 52.8% against 47.2%, a gap of 12,701 ballots — on the highest turnout since 1944. Yes wins in both Reykjavik constituencies, no passes 60% in the three rural constituencies. The vote does not withdraw the application filed in 2009.

Violence in Ceuta: Spain asks the European Union for help after a month of migration crisis

A month after a record crossing from Morocco, the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has seen a surge of violence since 26 August 2026: groups of residents attacked migrants and tore down camps, a military vehicle was stoned and twelve Moroccan nationals were arrested. Madrid is asking the European Union for help.

Canada retaliates against US tariffs as Trump threatens to double duties on cars

Ottawa rejected the deal proposed by Washington and announced retaliatory tariffs alongside a support plan for its industries. Donald Trump in turn threatens to double duties on Canadian cars, trucks and parts. More than 500 products already face 50 % tariffs. The value of exports affected varies: 20 billion dollars in most accounts, 28 billion according to the Canadian press.

Twenty-nine US states take Meta to court over hooking children on social media

The trial pitting twenty-nine US states against Meta opened on 18 August 2026 in Oakland, California. State attorneys general accuse the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to hold minors' attention and of misleading the public about the effects on their mental health; Meta rejects the claims. Ten countries cover the sequence, and the damages figure reported varies sevenfold from one newsroom to another.

Morocco intercepts migrants bound for Ceuta as Spain reinforces the enclave — and no two newsrooms count the same thing

On 15 August, Moroccan gendarmes intercepted people attempting to reach Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa, after an online call for a second mass crossing. Madrid reinforced its deployment. Tallies diverge sharply between newsrooms: 111 arrests in some accounts, 294 in others, and deaths from 30 July sometimes folded into the episode, sometimes kept separate.

Trump says he will declare the Strait of Hormuz "US territory"; Tehran hits back

Donald Trump said on 14 August that he would "very soon" make the Strait of Hormuz US territory. A White House official later described the remark as a joke, a nuance some countries report and others omit. Iranian deputy minister Kazem Gharibabadi hit back. About a fifth of the world's oil and gas passes through the channel between Iran and Oman, where traffic has collapsed since February.

Nigel Farage wins back the seat he gave up: a by-election he triggered himself, boycotted by all his serious opponents

Nigel Farage won back the Clacton seat on 14 August with 22,239 votes against 9,455 for a satirical candidate wearing a bin on his head. He had resigned that same seat in July, under investigation over an undeclared £5 million donation. The major parties boycotted the vote; the inquiry resumed hours after the result.

Karoline Leavitt leaves the White House: a family decision for some, an electoral calendar for others

Donald Trump announced on 12 August that his press secretary would leave at the end of the month to become an outside adviser. At 28, she was the youngest in history. She cites her family; part of the press notes she is leaving two months before the midterm elections. No successor has been named.
