The Belgian press is reporting without hesitation the announcement made on Friday evening on Truth Social by Donald Trump: an agreement with Denmark and Greenland would give the United States "permanent control" over the security of the Arctic territory. VRT NWS recalls that this text concludes months of threats from the American president, who did not exclude the possibility of taking Greenland by force; DH and La Libre note that he initially demanded a "simple attachment" of the territory to the United States.

According to Trump, cited by VRT, Washington and Danish and Greenlandic representatives have worked "to ensure that the United States will always have full authority to do in Greenland what is necessary to defend the security of Greenland and the United States". He adds that no "adversary" of the United States will now be able to have a base, a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without the explicit written authorization of Washington — a clause that DH and La Libre reproduce almost word for word, published on Friday, September 18, just before midnight. An anonymous source from the US State Department confirms to AFP, cited by VRT, that the agreement is intended to prevent China and Russia from building military bases on the island.

The Belgian press also notes the reservation expressed by Copenhagen. VRT quotes Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who confirms the agreement and states that it "reinforces security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic", without commenting in detail on the terms advanced by Trump; according to her, the sovereignty of Denmark and the inhabitants of Greenland will be respected. The reminder is not trivial: Greenland is an autonomous territory of an EU member state, itself an ally of the US NATO — a status that VRT takes care to emphasize in the background.
