US Supreme Court lets deportations of migrants to third countries resume

The Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended a Boston judge's ruling that removing migrants to countries other than their own, without assessing the risks they face, was unlawful. More than 25,000 people have already been deported to 29 countries. The case will be heard on the merits in December.

Two mass shootings kill 27 in one night in South Africa, near Johannesburg and Cape Town

Overnight from 26 to 27 September, gunmen killed 17 people at a tavern in Wedela township near Johannesburg, then 10 more in Lwandle near Cape Town. Police are examining a turf war between illegal miners and a business rivalry; no arrests have been announced. "This cannot go on like this," Cyril Ramaphosa said, five days after another mass shooting near Durban.

Five men arrested near RAF Fairford, a base used by US forces against Iran, on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act

British police arrested five men near RAF Fairford after three suspicious vans were reported; army bomb-disposal experts examined the vehicles and 85 households were evacuated. London allows Washington to strike Iran from the base. According to the Daily Telegraph, an Iranian lead is among those being examined; police have not named anyone behind the plot.

Trump and Xi display their "friendship" at the White House, with a state dinner and pandas but no progress on trade or Taiwan

On the second day of Xi Jinping's state visit, Donald Trump hailed a "truly great friendship": under two hours of talks, a state dinner with the heads of Apple, Nvidia and AMD, and two pandas promised to Atlanta's zoo. No progress was announced on trade, Taiwan, rare earths or AI; the trade truce is only extended to January 10.

The UK will refuel Saudi jets against the Houthis, where Washington has held back

London has agreed to Riyadh's request for defensive military support against the Houthis: Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft will refuel Saudi fighter jets in the air, on missions deemed defensive, for a period of weeks. It is one of Prime Minister Andy Burnham's first military decisions. On the sidelines of the UN, the G7 condemned the Houthi strikes and called on Iran to stop arming them.

The AfD comes first in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Friedrich Merz's CDU misses the 5% threshold for the first time in its history

Two German states voted on Sunday. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the AfD came first with about 38.2% of the vote while the CDU fell to 4.9%, below the 5% threshold, leaving it out of a state parliament for the first time in its history. In Berlin, Die Linke came first with 25.3%, ahead of the CDU. Friedrich Merz called the result a disaster for his party and said he would stay on as chancellor.

The US, Denmark and Greenland reach a deal giving Washington permanent military access to the island, with no transfer of sovereignty

Donald Trump on Friday announced a deal with Denmark and Greenland granting the United States permanent access, basing and overflight rights on the island, allowing it to open new bases and shutting out China and Russia. Copenhagen stresses that it recognises Danish sovereignty; it is due to be signed next week at the UN, then approved by the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments.

Von der Leyen proposes making Canada the EU's first 'associate member'; Trump threatens to cut off trade with Europe

Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the Union's first 'associate member', with Mark Carney present and given a standing ovation. Donald Trump called the idea 'laughable' and threatened very heavy tariffs on Europe, or halting trade with it, if he judged the move a 'hostile act'. Ottawa applied the same day to join the Joint Expeditionary Force, a ten-nation northern European coalition led by London.

NATO downs a drone over Lithuania as a Russian frigate fires flares at a Danish helicopter

NATO air-policing fighters shot down a drone over Lithuania overnight into Tuesday, a first in that airspace; it came down near Pratkūnai, about a hundred kilometres from Vilnius. The same night, Denmark's defence command says a Russian frigate fired two flares at a Fennec helicopter off Gedser. Copenhagen summoned the Russian ambassador and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the move “irresponsible”; Moscow says it is investigating and accuses the helicopter of dangerous manoeuvres.

The war against Iran has cost $38 billion and used up to two-thirds of US interceptors, Congress budget office says

The Congressional Budget Office puts the cost of the war against Iran at $38.1 billion through 1 August, about $246 million a day, with a further $2-3 billion a month if the conflict continues. More than half covers replacing munitions; extra flight hours account for $10.4 billion. The agency estimates the war has consumed up to two-thirds of US missile interceptors since June 2025. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had given Congress a figure of $37.5 billion in July.
