ANALYSIS
Moscow, October 11, 2026. Russian agencies are reporting the attack on Riyadh's King Khalid Airport in stages. TASS initially reported on Saturday, October 10, that the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation stated there were "several injured" and operations were suspended; a source from air traffic control later indicated that the airport would remain closed until midnight, then "until the end of Sunday." Vedomosti, citing Reuters, mentioned more than ten rescue teams and canceled or diverted flights, as well as cancellations by Etihad and Qatar Airways.
The toll is rising with each dispatch. RIA Novosti first cited the New York Times (at least twelve dead), then Reuters, which relayed the Saudi authority: twelve dead and 309 injured. RIA also picked up the Wall Street Journal, which reported that missiles hit terminals 3 and 4, with part of the roof collapsing on people, and helicopters evacuating the injured. Sputnik detailed the Saudi statement: four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and one American were among the dead, with some injured in critical condition.
TASS published the coalition's position: its spokesperson, Turki al-Maliki, called the Houthi attack a "full-fledged war crime" and promised a "decisive" response. The agency also cited Antonio Guterres, who was "deeply shocked" and stated that "these attacks must stop immediately," as well as Marco Rubio, who referred to the "terrorist Houthis" and confirmed the death of an American. Sputnik reported Donald Trump's reaction ("not acceptable"): "the Saudis are good fighters," he said, and the United States has contacts with the Houthis.
RT gave the floor to the Houthi camp. Mohammed al-Bukhaiti confirmed to them that the movement was behind the strikes, aimed at forcing Riyadh to accept a "comprehensive and permanent peace" and an end to the mutual blockade. RT placed the attack in the context of the offensive launched about a week earlier by the Yemeni government backed by Riyadh, with Saudi airstrikes.
The military context comes from RIA: fighting resumed in mid-July after four years of calm, with the Houthis now holding the entire western coast of the Red Sea, and the recognized authorities announcing on Monday an operation to retake Sanaa. Vedomosti recalled the Houthi warning of October 5: Saudi airspace "will become a military operations theater."
