ANALYSIS
Brasília, October 24, 2026. The Brazilian press reports the announcement made on Friday, October 23, by the White House: First Lady Melania Trump would have "mediou e assegurou" a temporary ceasefire in Olechky, a city in the Kherson region occupied by Russian forces since February 2022. G1 (Globo) specifies that, according to the American statement, the truce will come into effect on October 29, to allow for the sending of humanitarian aid and to prepare a civilian evacuation via a secure route. Folha de S.Paulo, on the other hand, mentions an effective date of "next Tuesday (27)", confirmed, according to them, by Russian and Ukrainian forces: the two newspapers therefore do not give the same date.
G1 quotes the First Lady: "The situation in Olechky is terrible. It's a city on the front line, on the brink of disaster." The remaining population, mostly composed of elderly people, urgently needs care, medication, food, and drinking water. The daily also notes that the White House announced that "an impartial American press organization" will follow and document the process, and recalls that Melania Trump has been working, since her husband's return to the presidency, to obtain the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
Folha provides a figure: around 2,000 inhabitants remain, out of 24,000 before the war. The newspaper writes that the crisis has mobilized even Pope Léon XIV, who phoned Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to demand a temporary truce. It emphasizes that Ukraine no longer supplies the area and that the fighting prevents the arrival of Russian aid. It also notes that "it is not clear" how Melania Trump acted.
Folha's framing is mainly geopolitical. The newspaper sees this as "another gesture by Putin" in the "diplomatic ballet" that is preparing for the resumption of US-mediated negotiations. It estimates that Putin is in a position of strength, under pressure from Kiev's strikes on his refineries, and asserts that Donald Trump has taken Moscow's position, concluded a diesel purchase agreement with Russia, and suspended sanctions to lower fuel prices before the November 3 legislative elections. G1 adds that, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, direct negotiations are scheduled for November in Abu Dhabi.
