ANALYSIS
London, 24 October 2026. The British government reports the same announcement, made on Friday by the White House: the First Lady, Melania Trump, is said to have "obtained" a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in Olechky, a city occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the February 2022 invasion. The truce is set to begin on 29 October.
The situation of the inhabitants, trapped between Ukrainian positions on the other side of the Dniepr and Russian forces to the east, is dire. They have recently been reduced to eating garden herbs to survive. The Independent estimates the population to be 2,000 people, subject to a blockade that limits food and aid. The White House statement describes a "front-line city on the brink of disaster", without medicine, food, or drinking water, with little electricity, mined roads, and regular military attacks.
According to the statement cited by the three media outlets, civil officials from both countries will visit the inhabitants to assess their needs, and those who want to leave will receive coordinated transportation to their chosen destination. Melania Trump says she expects some to go to Russia and others to Ukraine. She claims that "without my intervention", the entry of aid and the evacuation of the elderly would have been impossible.
The British government confirms that both belligerents, Kiev and Moscow, have validated the agreement and announced that their forces will cease fire at 02:00 GMT on 27 October. The statement does not specify how long the truce will last. The Daily Mail, which is updating its article, recalls that Melania Trump, born in Slovenia, has already worked to reunite Ukrainian children with their parents taken by the Russians, and that she wrote to Vladimir Putin in August, in a letter delivered by Donald Trump during the Anchorage summit.
The tone varies: the Daily Mail writes that the First Lady "negotiated" the agreement, while The Independent headlines that she "claims" to have obtained a ceasefire for one city, while speaking of a "surprising peace breakthrough". None of the three texts detail the control of the truce.
