ANALYSIS
Kiev, October 24, 2026. On Friday, October 23, the White House announced that Melania Trump had obtained a local ceasefire from Kiev and Moscow in Olechky, a town in the Kherson region occupied by Russia since 2022, on the Dnieper River opposite Kherson. According to the statement relayed by Kyiv Post, it is set to begin on October 29 to allow aid in and prepare for the evacuation of civilians through a secure corridor, to either Ukraine or Russia, at the residents' choice. The White House estimates that between 1,700 and 2,000 people remain on site, including about fifty children, mostly elderly people.
The Ukrainian press puts the urgency at the forefront. TSN writes that civilians are "on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe". Melania Trump describes "a frontline town on the verge of disaster", with mined roads, limited electricity, and regular attacks, and claims that "without my intervention" aid and evacuation of the elderly would be impossible.
Ukrainian confirmations are pouring in. Mediator Dmytro Loubinets announces a humanitarian operation and a ceasefire on October 29: "The operation is extremely complex and will be carried out in stages", he says, thanking Melania Trump and her team. Davyd Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People group, mentions an unblocking operation aimed at permanent humanitarian corridors, the result of a "long process", and thanks the First Lady as well as the Pope. The Ukrainian General Staff specifies that Ukraine will establish a ceasefire in a designated area from 3 am, Kiev time, on October 27, and recalls that units have already delivered aid to residents by drone.
On the Russian side, Ukrainska Pravda reports, according to TASS, that Dmitry Peskov confirms the agreement, praises Melania Trump's efforts, and indicates that the evacuation could last several days, without hindrance for those who want to leave. Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov announces a ceasefire regime from 4 am, Moscow time, on October 27, with recognition of the engineering corps to secure the convoy's passage.
Ukrainian media also point out the gray areas: the statement does not specify the duration of the ceasefire or the control of the corridor, and the American press organization responsible for accompanying the teams is not named. Ukrainska Pravda cautiously headlines that the White House "claims" the ceasefire. The dates of October 27 and 29 are circulating without being reconciled.
