ANALYSIS
Oslo, October 24, 2026. Norway's Dagbladet and Aftenposten initially present the Olechky ceasefire as a US announcement. Dagbladet reports that "the White House claims" Melania Trump secured a local ceasefire in this Russian-occupied city, just south of Kherson. According to the statement, Ukraine and Russia have agreed to temporarily suspend all military operations to allow humanitarian aid in and prepare for the evacuation of civilians through a secure corridor.
The two newspapers devote a large section to the situation of the inhabitants. Dagbladet recalls that the city had 24,000 inhabitants before 2022 and now has around 2,000, including 50 children, and quotes the statement: Olechky is "a frontline city on the brink of catastrophe", populated mainly by elderly people deprived of care, food, and drinking water. Aftenposten adds that, according to the UN, the last store closed in January, the surroundings are mined, and it is "mortally dangerous" to leave the city, regardless of the direction. Both titles also recall the 2023 flooding after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.
Melania Trump's quote is reported verbatim: "it was clear that without my intervention, it would have been impossible" to provide aid and evacuate the elderly. Dagbladet specifies that the First Lady and her representative would have worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
Aftenposten publishes two versions. The first notes that the message is not commented on by either Russian or Ukrainian sources. The second headlines "Russia confirms": according to Reuters, Russian authorities validate the agreement and say they are coordinating its implementation with the Ukrainian army. Dmitry Peskov says he appreciates the First Lady's efforts, who "made a substantial contribution" to coordinating the operation. The newspaper notes a calendar discrepancy: American sources mention October 29, but on Friday evening, Moscow announces that it will come into effect on October 27.
Aftenposten finally recalls that Melania Trump had handed Vladimir Putin a "peace letter" in August last year in Alaska, on child protection, and that Russia had then judged that she was exerting pressure in a "cunning way". Peskov now believes that "her voice is important".
