DOMINANT ANGLE
Moscow takes away from this Nobel the scientific scope of IceCube: a new observation channel of the Universe, explained by an expert from MIPT, with no emphasis on the nationality of the laureate.

ANALYSIS
Moscow, October 7, 2026. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was announced on Tuesday, October 6, in Stockholm, and the Russian press first talks about it as a scientific event. Meduza reports that the award goes to Francis Halzen, transcribed as "Фрэнсис Хальцен", for his "decisive contribution to the work of the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin". The media recalls that the 2025 laureate was a trio composed of John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis, distinguished "for the discovery of the quantum tunnel effect on a macroscopic scale".
RIA Novosti, on its part, consulted Dmitri Gavrilov, director of the school of physics and technology of radio engineering and information technologies at MIPT and doctor of technical sciences. According to him, "the value of IceCube's result lies above all in the detection of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin". He sees it as "an additional channel for studying the Universe", which allows exploring the processes where cosmic particles acquire enormous energies. Neutrino observations complement the data from classical telescopes and serve to verify the models of these processes.
The expert specifies that evidence of neutrino emission by the active galaxy NGC 1068 has already been obtained, but that the concrete mechanisms of this emission still require study. RIA Novosti also links the topic to Russian news in the field by referring to its August 2025 article on the launch in China of the world's largest neutrino observatory.
Meduza situates the prize in Nobel week. It opened with medicine, awarded to American Karl Deisseroth and two German colleagues, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, for optogenetics. Chemistry will be announced on October 7, literature on October 8, peace on October 9 in Oslo, and the economics prize on October 12. The award ceremony will take place on December 10, the day of Alfred Nobel's death.
In the two consulted texts, neither Francis Halzen's Belgian origin nor his position in the United States, nor the size of the IceCube collaboration, are mentioned. The narrative remains centered on neutrino physics and the Nobel program.
