ANALYSIS
Rome, October 1, 2026. The Italian press opens with the word "terror". Panorama headlines with the co-pilot who "attacked the commander" of the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight, which departed at 7:05 local time. ANSA and La Repubblica initially report the transponder code 7500, indicating an illicit interference, then the 15,000-foot drop in one minute described by Panorama according to a passenger pilot. The Boeing 737-800 eventually landed in Tabouk, Saudi Arabia.
The first hours are confusing. ANSA relays Israeli media, which initially speak of a Russian pilot and a Ukrainian, before correcting: the aggressor would be an Omani. Libero recalls that the Emirati company confirmed a "fight" between pilots, without endorsing the attack thesis advanced by Benyamin Netanyahu. ANSA also reports a suicide hypothesis, which Israeli authorities say they do not exclude.
The security reading then dominates. ANSA writes that Israel "feared another 9/11, this time in Tel Aviv", and quotes Defense Minister Israel Katz, who speaks of a attempted jihadist attack. Repubblica mentions a Mossad and Shin Bet track, with a possible role for Iran. ANSA specifies, according to Channel 12, that Israel has no indication of direction by Tehran and leans towards a "lone wolf". A colleague describes the man as very pious.
Crew control becomes a topic in itself: Israel seeks to understand how an Omani pilot was able to fly to the Hebrew state, probably with dual nationality, since only certain countries are authorized. Gianluca Di Feo, in Repubblica, lists the "dark points": why the plane did not dive towards Israel, and if the men who intervened were undercover agents.
The heroic story occupies a large place. ANSA describes three Israeli passengers rushing to the cockpit, aided by off-duty pilots. Adnkronos reports the testimony of Yaniv Hayon, hugged by Netanyahu at Ben Gurion: "I grabbed him, blocked him and dragged him out." Trump, quoted by Adnkronos, speaks of a "plumber" and a story "maybe true". The Indian commander, for his part, is mostly mentioned as injured.
