ANALYSIS
Stockholm, October 1, 2026. The flydubai FZ1073 flight, which departed from Dubai for Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, is making headlines in Sweden from the angle of averted danger. Expressen talks about a "Piloten ville krascha" (pilot wanted to crash): the alert came around 8 am Swedish time, then the plane turned around and plummeted before disappearing from tracking sites. It was able to land around 9 am in Saudi Arabia, in Tabouk. Dagens Nyheter specifies, according to tracking data, a drop of about 10,000 to 5,000 meters.
The dominant framing is that of terrorism. Expressen and Aftonbladet quote Benyamin Netanyahu, who says the pilot's intention was to crash the plane with all passengers, and Defense Minister Israel Katz, who speaks of a "jihadist terrorist attempt". Aftonbladet and Expressen also relay, according to the Jerusalem Post, two leads being investigated by Israel: a crash to the ground or an attack of the 9/11 type. The two titles make it a shock headline: "Teorin: Planerade 11 september-liknande attack" (Theory: Planned 9/11-like attack). Sveriges Radio recalls that Minister Itamar Ben Gvir qualifies the pilot as a terrorist.
The Swedish press gives a lot of space to the stories of passengers, reported via Keshet 12, Haaretz, and the Times of Israel. They describe cries coming from the cockpit, blood, and then three passengers who rushed to subdue the second pilot, tied up with audio headset cables. Aftonbladet quotes Tzika Manes, evoking more than twenty minutes of struggle. Two flydubai pilots, who were off duty and present in first class, reportedly took control; Netanyahu praises these "héroes" (Expressen).
The Swedish media point out areas of uncertainty. The motive is deemed "oklart" (unclear) and the hypothesis of an isolated act dominates. Expressen adds, according to unconfirmed information, that the suspect would be from Oman, a country without normalized relations with Israel, while flydubai can only employ pilots from countries with normalized relations for this route. Sveriges Radio emphasizes that the company only confirms a "confrontation" and is investigating the cause. None of the articles mention the suspension of flights to Israel or the nationality of the injured commander.
The passengers, welcomed as heroes at Ben Gurion that evening, are described as survivors. Svenska Dagbladet reconstructs the flight: a Boeing 737 Max 8 with about 170 passengers, including several children, on a daily route.
