ANALYSIS
Washington, October 1, 2026. The US media is reporting the incident of flydubai flight FZ1073 as a possible attempted attack on a Boeing 737 bound for Israel. On Wednesday, September 30, the plane made an emergency landing in Tabouk, Saudi Arabia, after a pilot stabbed his colleague over Jordanian airspace.
Reuters, as reported by HuffPost, cites three Israeli officials who say the co-pilot is suspected of stabbing the commander in a possible "terror attack", with no link to a mental health issue according to their assessment. One of them identifies the attacker as an Omani national. CBS reports that an Israeli security official is examining the hypothesis of a 9/11-style attack and a possible accomplice, and quotes Defense Minister Israel Katz speaking of an "attempted jihadist terror attack". Fox News adds that, according to the Jerusalem Post, the army, Mossad, and Shin Bet are leaning towards a terrorist act.
Data from Flightradar24, cited by Axios, shows an emergency signal, then an alert for unlawful interference, then another emergency signal, with a drop of over 17,000 feet. HuffPost mentions a drop of nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the first signal. Israel sent fighter jets, which turned back before landing.
Passenger accounts are dominating the coverage. Ron Levi tells CBS he experienced "the most frightening experience we've ever had in our lives". A passenger interviewed by Fox recounts that the co-pilot collapsed onto the controls. According to CBS, the plane was landed by a non-duty crew member who was on board. Time relays Netanyahu, who names the commander Smit Machchhar, an Indian citizen, a "true hero" who saved 174 people.
Reservations are being expressed. NBC was unable to independently verify the accounts, Fox notes that flydubai has not publicly confirmed the stabbing, and Axios highlights that key details remain unclear. The Emirati civil aviation authority warns against the circulation of non-official information. flydubai is suspending all its flights to and from Israel during the investigation.
