ANALYSIS
Abuja, October 1, 2026. Nigerian press outlets are reporting on the incident involving flydubai flight FZ1073 based on agency dispatches (Reuters, AFP) and Israeli statements. The Dubai-Tel Aviv flight landed on Wednesday, September 30, at Tabouk Airport in Saudi Arabia at 9:45 local time, according to Nigerian Eye, after an altercation in the cockpit.
The versions initially diverge on the nature of the facts. BusinessDay Nigeria mentions a "brawl" between pilots and around 150 people on board; Nigerian Eye refers to a fight in which the two pilots were allegedly injured. Legit.ng, more assertive, writes that the co-pilot, an Omani national according to an Israeli official, stabbed the pilot and attempted to crash the plane, with over 170 Israelis on board.
Flightradar24 data is cited by all: the plane dropped approximately 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, according to Reuters via Legit.ng; Nigerian Eye mentions a descent from nearly 34,000 to less than 17,000 feet in one minute. Benyamin Netanyahu speaks of a "very serious security incident", says the plane entered a spin and that passengers and a crew member forced their way into the cockpit, where the co-pilot was attempting to "sabotage the plane's systems". According to his spokesperson, the injured pilot had himself activated the door opening. Vanguard reiterates the AFP: the aggressor is arrested and being questioned by Saudi authorities.
The testimony of Miryam Shira Ohayon, relayed by Vanguard, occupies a central place: the co-pilot "tried to kill the pilot" and carry out a "suicide attack" against the plane. She says a doctor provided first aid and that two other pilots, who were passengers, took control of the plane. Her mother, Yasmin Abukasis, explains that the young woman was traveling to a ceremony for her brother, who was killed on October 7, 2023.
On an operational level, Legit.ng cites flydubai's statement suspending all flights to and from Israel "while the investigation continues", and indicates that Netanyahu has ordered reinforced security checks on companies serving Israel. Nigerian Eye notes that the Israeli army scrambled fighter jets due to initial fears.
The articles in the pool do not mention the Indian pilot hailed as a hero or any official reaction from Abuja: the narrative remains that of a threat to a civilian plane, seen through Israeli sources and agencies.
