ANALYSIS
Berlin, October 1, 2026. German media initially treat the episode as a still opaque air security incident. Tagesschau, ZEIT, and the FAZ reconstruct the chronology: flydubai's FZ1073 flight, which departed from Dubai at 7:05 local time bound for Tel Aviv, lost nearly 17,000 feet of altitude in one minute, from almost 34,000 to less than 17,000 according to Flightradar24, before landing at 9:45 in Tabouk, Saudi Arabia. The aircraft first emitted the 7700 code, a distress signal, then the 7500 code, reserved for hijackings.
The Israeli version occupies the bulk of the texts. According to Benyamin Netanyahu, a pilot stabbed his colleague and attempted to crash the plane, filled with Israelis, into the ground. Defense Minister Israel Katz speaks of a foiled jihadist attack thanks to the courage of passengers, and Itamar Ben Gvir claims that the goal was "to assassinate the 180 Israelis on board". The FAZ and Handelsblatt report that passengers, along with a crew member, entered the cockpit and subdued the aggressor, who was trying to damage the onboard instruments. According to sources close to the investigation cited by Tagesschau, Israeli security agents were among them.
Tagesschau and ZEIT emphasize the limitations: the aggressor's motive is "unklar", the accusations of an attack have received no official confirmation, and several media outlets initially mentioned a simple fight between pilots. DW cites Israeli security sources who initially spoke of a dispute. Flydubai confirms an "altercation" and indicates that a second crew, present in the cabin, took control. The Tabouk airport specifies that the captain and first officer were hospitalized.
The passengers continued their journey the same evening on a replacement plane and were reunited with their loved ones in Tel Aviv. Handelsblatt shows Netanyahu welcoming them at the airport ("You are the hero") and broadcasts the video of the scene.
The same newspaper puts the episode into the political context: less than a month before legislative elections that could put an end to Netanyahu's term, the event is "zwangsläufig auch politisch", and it recalls the death of his brother Yonatan during the Entebbe raid fifty years ago. The question of cooperation with Riyadh and Abu Dhabi is hardly addressed, and the commercial stakes of the flight suspension are not mentioned in these articles.
