ANALYSIS
Riga, October 1, 2026. The Latvian press is treating the flydubai FZ1073 incident as an ongoing story, with successive versions emerging. LA.lv reports that the plane, which departed from Dubai for Tel Aviv, made an emergency landing on Wednesday in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with 174 passengers, including 27 children, mostly Israeli citizens.
According to LA.lv, Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu stated that a pilot had stabbed his colleague and apparently attempted to crash the plane; passengers and crew members reportedly subdued the attacker. He praised "these heroes" who "saved many lives." Defense Minister Israel Katz spoke of a foiled jihadist attack, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir referred to a terrorist. LA.lv notes that Katz did not indicate what evidence this judgment was based on, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Another LA.lv article, citing the AP, is more cautious: a regional official mentioned a conflict in the cockpit possibly involving both pilots, with anonymous sources speaking under cover of the investigation. Israel scrambled fighter jets due to concerns about a hijacking, and the plane landed in Tabuk, which is also a military base. Netanyahu's office indicated that the situation was under control. Passengers told Channel 12 that they heard screams coming from the front.
Jauns.lv focuses on the image: a video from the cabin shows panicked passengers crying and praying. The site lists the hypotheses: a deliberate maneuver towards the ground, a knife drawn by a pilot, a blood-stained cockpit. It also cites a version, later denied, according to which the pilots were of Russian and Ukrainian origin, and another from the Walla site: a possible Omani attacker, an Emirati victim. The safe landing is attributed to the additional crew members on board. According to Flightradar24, the plane emitted a general emergency signal, then a code that may indicate an illicit intervention, over Jordanian airspace.
The motive remains unknown in the Latvian texts, which do not report any reaction from the airline or conclusions from the Saudi investigation.
