ANALYSIS
Bogotá, October 19, 2026. The Colombian press is treating the French unrest as a crisis of government and finances as much as public order. Portafolio reports that Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced "curfews" in several parts of the country on Monday after a crisis meeting, ruling out a state of emergency in favor of "partial curfews". Marseille has banned demonstrations from 12 pm to 8 pm and Denain, near the Belgian border, has decreed a nighttime curfew.
El Colombiano describes a day of protest against the high cost of living that brought together between 550,000 and 800,000 people, according to the authorities and the CGT, before degenerating into looting. The newspaper reports 1,800 arrests, including a "record" 855 in Paris, and 1,500 damaged businesses according to the Federation of Commerce and Distribution. The 19th-century city hall of Limoges burned down in a fire that the prefect attributes to "a savage horde". Paris Deputy Mayor Lamia El Aaraje mentions a level of violence never seen in the city.
La República CO emphasizes the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, which was refused by Emmanuel Macron, who asked him to put an end to the barricades and looting and be transparent about the intelligence failures. The daily notes that 60,000 police officers were deployed on Saturday, a force that Nuñez acknowledges is insufficient, at a time when the government must pass a budget, six months before the presidential election. According to Portafolio, Macron admitted "failures" in police management and called for "new operating methods".
The financial aspect is also highlighted in La República: French bonds have hit a two-week low, with the spread with the Bund reaching 146 basis points and the CAC 40 falling 1.5%. Louis-Vincent Gave, from Gavekal Research, believes that the president is "in office, but not in power". The unions have called for a national strike on November 5.
Semana focuses on the dispute between Lecornu and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who denounces a "regime crisis" and reproaches the government for "playing with fire", while the Prime Minister invites him to designate "those who loot and vandalize". El Colombiano finally notes the reactions of Donald Trump, who links immigration and unrest, and the European Commission, which asks Paris to protect the right to demonstrate.
