ANALYSIS
New Delhi, October 19, 2026. The Indian English-language press is covering the French crisis from the angle of public order. The Times of India is reporting on Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who on Monday asked prefects to impose "very limited" and "localized" curfews to prevent new violence, after a crisis meeting with government officials. Despite scenes of violence, no one was killed on Saturday, he said: "it's a miracle." The newspaper notes that the head of government is hinting at a state of emergency and announcing partial unemployment for affected businesses starting Tuesday.
The tolls are taking up a lot of space: over 2,400 arrests according to the authorities, nearly 1,000 police officers injured according to the Interior Minister, one protester dead from a cardiac arrest in Paris, the city hall of Limoges ravaged by flames. The Hindu BusinessLine is quoting Emmanuel Macron's televised address on Sunday: "anger" and "shame", with the implication of "insurrectional elements" from radical far-left groups. The newspaper is reporting 550,000 protesters according to the authorities, 800,000 according to the organizers.
The resignation of Laurent Nuñez, refused by the Élysée "given the need for continuous command of the police forces", is being reported by the Free Press Journal and the Deccan Chronicle. They are repeating the demand for transparency on planning and intelligence failures, as well as "new operational methods". Nuñez told France Inter: "I am responsible for everything that happens."
The Times of India is also reporting on the temporary closure of the Louvre, blocked by students, recalling the theft of jewelry last year, estimated at 88 million euros, and noting that European governments have issued travel advisories.
A more ideological reading appears in the Deccan Chronicle, which is reporting on an investigation by Fox News Digital identifying 50 organizations linked to the student movement, including only 15 youth organizations, and pointing to an imprint in India via the Indian Alliance Paris and its message "Bravo for today" addressed to the Gen Z of France and India.
