ANALYSIS
Caracas, October 19, 2026. Venezuelan media are providing detailed coverage of the French executive's response to the violence that followed the demonstration on Saturday, October 17, against the high cost of living. El Nacional, quoting AFP, reports that Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced "curfews" on Monday after a crisis meeting, while refusing to declare a state of emergency. Contrapunto quotes his statement: a curfew by territory is, according to him, "a more suitable instrument" than a state of emergency, which he does not rule out for later. The Ministry of the Interior was to release a "fairly precise" map of the affected areas. Marseille banned demonstrations from 12 pm to 8 pm on Monday, and Denain decreed a nighttime curfew.
The numerical toll is given significant attention. Últimas Noticias, citing the EFE agency, indicates that 2,331 people were in custody, including 70% of adults, with the prosecution seeking provisional detention in more than 80% of cases; 200 investigators are deployed in Paris. El Nacional mentions around 2,400 arrests and nearly a thousand members of the security forces injured. Analitica reports a record 855 arrests in the capital and the announcement by the President of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, of a parliamentary inquiry commission. Descifrado and Contrapunto relay the statement of Carrefour's CEO, Alexandre Bompard, who says the damage will amount to "hundreds of millions of euros", with 1,500 stores attacked; the government announces a partial unemployment scheme for the approximately 3,000 affected businesses.
The political angle appears in touches. El Nacional reports that Emmanuel Macron refused the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, to maintain continuity of command, and asked him to implement new intervention methods; Nuñez acknowledged an "asymmetric" device in some respects. Últimas Noticias reports that Lecornu attributes the disorders to the far left and delinquency and mentions a "nebula" that could call into question the calendar of the presidential election, scheduled in six months. The same media quotes Macron on Sunday: the country "needs order and calm, not escalation".
The social dimension is present but secondary: Contrapunto links the anger to the rise in the cost of living and the deterioration of education and health, and El Nacional describes the blockade of the Louvre on Monday by students denouncing police repression and budget cuts. The official participation frequencies diverge: 550,000 according to the government, more than 800,000 according to the organizers.
