Keiko Fujimori was sworn in on July 28 as president of Peru for 2026-2031, the first woman elected to the post. Before several Latin American heads of state, she announced deploying the armed forces against crime and a minimum-wage increase, in a deeply divided country.

Trump Signs Nuclear Deal With Saudi Arabia That Could Open the Door to Uranium Enrichment

The Trump administration signed a civilian nuclear cooperation deal (a "123 Agreement") with Saudi Arabia that, lacking the "Gold Standard" renunciation of enrichment, could open a path to uranium enrichment by the kingdom. The text still requires approval from Congress. The move revives debate over Middle East proliferation, the Israel angle, and the comparison with the war waged against Iran's nuclear program.

France Bans Social Media for Under-15s, a First in the European Union

The French parliament gave final approval to a law setting a "digital age of majority" at 15, by 243 votes to 2 in the Senate and 279 to 81 in the National Assembly. New accounts will be barred from 1 September 2026 and existing under-15 accounts closed on 1 January 2027, with age verification falling on the platforms. France becomes the first EU country to take the step, following Australia.

Zelensky Sacks Army Chief Syrsky After a Week of Protests in Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi in his place, after a week of daily protests in Kyiv triggered by the sacking of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov. It is the biggest military shake-up since the war began, and the first time street pressure has forced a decision on the Ukrainian president.

Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on a Broad Range of Canadian Goods

Donald Trump signed three proclamations on 20 July imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian autos, alcohol, dairy, wine and cement, with no exemption for goods normally covered by the USMCA — a first since the agreement took effect. The tariffs kick in on 19 August, with talks between Washington and Ottawa still deadlocked.

El Mayo Zambada, Sinaloa Cartel Co-Founder, Sentenced to Life in Prison in the United States

Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, 76, co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, was sentenced to life without parole by federal judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn. He pleaded guilty in August 2025 in exchange for prosecutors dropping the death penalty. His July 2024 capture near El Paso, described as a trap set by a son of 'El Chapo', triggered an internal cartel war still raging two years on.
