Trump renames Lake Ontario "Lake America" by executive order

On 27 August 2026 Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America", as trade talks with Ottawa collapsed. The lake is a shared border water between New York State and the Canadian province of Ontario, and its name comes from an Iroquoian word. The order applies only to US federal nomenclature and does not bind Canada, which rejected it. The move follows the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America".

Meta settles the teen social media addiction case for $16.7 billion

On 26 August 2026 Meta reached a settlement with 29 US states, ending the Oakland trial over minors' addiction to Instagram and Facebook before its conclusion. The company will pay between $16.68 and $18 billion depending on how the total is counted, without admitting fault, and will apply a two-hour daily limit on Instagram for US teenagers. The next day, the European Commission demanded that Meta "protect our kids too".

South Korea sent its first container ship from Busan to Europe via the Northern Sea Route, after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz made the usual Gulf and Suez itinerary unusable. The crossing, estimated at 45 days, cuts thousands of kilometres off the distance but depends on Russian permits and on a navigation window limited to a few months a year.

A US federal judge strikes down the immigrant visa freeze targeting nationals of 75 countries

A US federal judge struck down the suspension of immigrant visa processing for nationals of seventy-five countries, ruling the measure contrary to law and finding that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had exceeded his authority. Russian 'double-tap' strike on a Kryvyi Rih shopping centre kills 14 and wounds more than 130

Russian drones struck a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, killing at least fourteen people and wounding more than a hundred and thirty. A second strike hit the same site while rescuers were working. Ukraine's foreign minister called on partners to help strengthen the country's air defences.

TikTok and its Chinese parent ByteDance agreed to pay 400 million dollars to the US Justice Department to close an investigation into the collection of minors' data. The settlement is described as one of the largest ever reached in the United States over children's privacy. The figure reported varies from country to country.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a campaign to collapse Iran's economy, telling other capitals they are either with Washington or against it. Ebola in DR Congo: WHO allocates 70,000 Ervebo doses and keeps the international emergency in force

The World Health Organization is allocating 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and maintaining the public health emergency of international concern. Twenty thousand doses are reserved for a phase 3 clinical trial against the Bundibugyo strain. Rwanda and neighbouring countries are tightening border screening.

Hakainde Hichilema re-elected in Zambia with 60% of the vote as opposition figures are arrested

Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected on 13 August 2026 with 60.49% of the vote against 37.87% for Brian Mundubile. Counting was briefly suspended after violence against electoral staff, and eleven people, including several opposition figures, were subsequently arrested and accused of plotting an armed insurrection.
