ANALYSIS
Bogotá, October 18, 2026. Colombian media outlets are reporting on the October 17 mobilization day in France as a series of disorders. El Colombiano leads with "Francia arde en nueva jornada de disturbios por el costo de vida" and reports that over 270 people were arrested, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The Medellín daily describes a mobilization launched by a call spread on social media under the slogan "Amarillos y Jóvenes", which brought together students, workers, farmers, teachers, and retirees against Emmanuel Macron's government.
Regarding participation, El Colombiano notes divergent estimates: 800,000 people according to the organizers, around 550,000 according to the authorities, and nearly 500,000 according to the CGT union. The cited slogans, "Abajo el sistema", "Tomamos la Bastilla", and "Macron dimisión", set the tone. The newspaper links the movement to the 2018-2019 yellow vests and the rise in fuel prices in the context of the Middle East war. It quotes Franck, a civil servant in Guéret: "At the end of the month, I have nothing left; prices are rising, but salaries are not."
La República, an economic daily, published an article ahead of the day of mobilization, in which the Ministry of the Interior announced hundreds of actions, including toll and gas station blockades, and 90 marches. Minister Laurent Nuñez said he expected "a fairly significant mobilization" and a police force prepared for possible violence from extremist elements. Forty people had been arrested in the Paris region before 9:30 am, mostly for carrying prohibited weapons or equipment. The article places France in a European wave, along with Spain, Italy, Albania, and Belgium, where affordable housing and the cost of living are among the demands.
Semana emphasizes the executive's response. Macron wrote on social media: "No hay lugar para la violencia en nuestra República", promising that those responsible for destruction, attacks on prefectures and businesses, and looting of town halls would be prosecuted and punished. He assured the security forces of the Nation's support and denounced those who "siembran el caos". Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis cell at the Ministry of the Interior, with Gérald Darmanin and Laurent Nuñez. The site also relays videos, including one of the looting of a Christian Dior boutique on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris.
