ANALYSIS
Vilnius, October 10, 2026. Lithuanian media are treating the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem Pillay first and foremost as an event in international law. Verslo žinios reprints the statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee: the laureate has "played a crucial role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are punished." The committee's president, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, attributes to her a "solid moral compass" and states that she has "expanded the scope and impact of international law," paving the way for a more comprehensive global legal order.
The economic daily outlines a three-part career path. Born in Durban, under apartheid, into a family of Tamil Indian origin, Navi Pillay became a lawyer in the face of deeply ingrained structural discrimination. Her work began with the defense of Nelson Mandela and other opponents of apartheid. She then sat on the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court, before holding the position of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Verslo žinios also recalls that she is currently a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar is accused of genocide.
The second part comes from 15min, which notes that Navi Pillay chaired the UN's independent commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory. The commission established last year that Israel was committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. The site quotes the response from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the X network: the Nobel Committee would have rewarded "the greatest lie of the 21st century," and Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels "is undoubtedly applauding in hell." 15min features this phrase in its title.
The two articles do not respond to each other. The first sticks to the committee's statement and biography, the second to the confrontation with Israel. Neither of the two provided texts gives an official Lithuanian reaction or analysis of what the prize changes for the International Criminal Court or for the defense of law in Eastern Europe.
