ANALYSIS
Warsaw, October 10, 2026. In the Polish press, the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, announced on Friday, October 9, in Oslo, is first read through the anger of Jerusalem. Dziennik.pl, RMF24, and Rzeczpospolita feature the same phrase from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published on X, in their headlines: "Joseph Goebbels is surely applauding this from hell," after the Nobel Committee, according to them, "rewarded the greatest lie of the 21st century."
The articles also report that, for Israeli diplomacy, the prize is "not a recognition of justice, but a grotesque use of the award to legitimize hatred and prejudice against Israel." Dziennik.pl adds the statement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accuses the committee of having lost its "moral compass," treats the laureate as a "sectarian" who built her career on slander, and accuses her of providing false evidence to prosecutor Karim Khan.
The portrait of the laureate comes as a complement. Gazeta Prawna presents her as an 85-year-old jurist, born in Durban to a family of Indian origin, who fought against apartheid and defended Nelson Mandela. She then sat on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and held the position of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The newspaper recalls that she influenced the decision of the Rwandan tribunal that rape and sexual violence can constitute genocide. Committee President Joergen Watne Frydnes hailed a person who has held states and leaders accountable and given hope to victims.
RMF24 and Rzeczpospolita recall the context: the UN commission of inquiry into the occupied Palestinian territories, which she chaired, concluded last year that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects these conclusions and describes the report as "scandalous." The two media outlets cite local authorities in Gaza, who report more than 74,000 deaths, and the Israeli army, which mentions around 22,000 Hamas and other group fighters killed. They mention the complaint filed by South Africa against Israel with the International Court of Justice, which has been under investigation since 2024, as well as the positions of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Doctors Without Borders.
The articles in the Polish corpus do not address the US sanctions against the ICC announced in the wake of the prize.
