Northern Cyprus: a ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsizes on the route to Turkey
On Sunday 30 August 2026, a catamaran ferry running from Kyrenia, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, to the Turkish port of Taşucu capsized and sank about 7.5 km off the island's northern coast. It was carrying between 260 and 270 people. Eight countries cover the sinking and no two report the same toll: six to eight dead, seventeen to twenty-four missing. The TRNC, recognised only by Turkey, declared three days of national mourning.
