Bogotá, September 25, 2026. The Colombian press closely followed the state visit of Xi Jinping to Washington, the first by a Chinese president to the White House in over a decade. Xi arrived on Wednesday at Andrews Air Force Base, on the outskirts of the US capital, where Donald Trump welcomed him. On Thursday, the official ceremony in the White House gardens, attended by the two first ladies, Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan, and the delegations of the two countries, preceded a closed-door meeting in the Oval Office, reportedly focused on "Iran, Taiwan, and foreign trade," according to Portafolio. Trump described the visit as "historic" and stated: "President Xi and I will continue to work together to forge a better future for our two nations."
The most commented-on gesture by the Colombian media remains the announcement, made by Xi himself during the welcoming ceremony, of the sending of two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to the Atlanta zoo. "The giant panda has been an emissary of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples. I have good news," the Chinese leader said. The two presidents were also photographed together on the "Presidential Walk of Fame," the White House colonnade, before heading to the Oval Office to discuss Iran, Taiwan, and trade.
In substance, La República reports, citing the Chinese agency Xinhua, that Xi asked Trump to maintain US opposition to "Taiwan's independence" and to act with caution on this sensitive issue. Beijing also demands an end to US arms sales to the island, which Washington continues to supply in the name of its "one China" policy. Xi also supported the resumption of the provisional agreement between Washington and Tehran, concluded in June to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
No announcement, however, was made regarding tariffs, rare earths, or artificial intelligence, issues that Portafolio lists among the tensions surrounding the meeting.
