According to the official Xinhua agency, cited by RTP, Xi Jinping said he hopes that Washington "will maintain its correct stance against Taiwan's independence," asking Donald Trump to handle this file "with prudence" to lay a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation. RTP recalls that Beijing claims control over this democratic island, which is diplomatically and militarily supported by the United States, which does not recognize its independence.
The protocol, for its part, was not lacking in pomp: SAPO and Jornal Económico detail the unprecedented gesture of Donald Trump, who went to the tarmac of Andrews Air Force Base to welcome Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan on Wednesday, rather than waiting for their arrival at the White House — a three-day state visit intended to reciprocate the grandeur of Trump's visit to China in May. Xi, cited by SAPO and RTP, defended the idea that China and the United States should be "partners, not rivals," calling for a relationship "with cooperation as the main pillar, competition within reasonable limits."
The Portuguese media also note that the talks were supposed to cover trade, technological competition — particularly artificial intelligence — and Beijing's support for Iran, without any concrete results being reported in their accounts.
Another fact relayed by RTP: the White House prevented CNN and MS NOW journalists from accessing the reception ceremony preceding the state dinner on Thursday evening, despite a court decision having restored their credentials. Trump accused the two channels on Truth Social of refusing to cover "one of the greatest and most beautiful events," claiming they did not want to give him "credit." Politico and the two channels had filed a joint complaint for violating the First Amendment after a presidential veto was issued on September 18.
