The Malaysian press details the arrival in Washington of Xi Jinping, who left Beijing on Wednesday "by special plane", accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, his right-hand man Cai Qi, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to CCTV cited by Malay Mail. A rare occurrence for an American president, Donald Trump is to personally welcome the Chinese leader upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews, before scheduled talks on Thursday. The White House describes the visit as a "major milestone": a military flyover ceremony on Thursday morning, a state dinner in the evening, and tea and a visit to the National Archives on Friday.
But protocol does not mask the tensions. The Vibes reports that Beijing has warned Washington not to cross its "red lines" on Taiwan and other interests deemed fundamental, while a $14 billion American arms contract destined for Taiwan remains pending. According to Malay Mail, Trump announced that he would discuss "almost everything" with Xi, a meeting that could touch on several points of friction: the war waged by Trump against Iran, which Beijing seeks to avoid American sanctions targeting countries trading with Tehran, despite reports that China may have provided Iran with intelligence for a strike against American troops; the trade war, with the two largest economies still trying to mitigate the effects of Trump's global tariffs; and the threat of conflict over Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.
Analysts cited by Malay Mail temper expectations, estimating that few concrete agreements will be announced. Preliminary discussions between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his counterpart He Lifeng focused on a communication channel around artificial intelligence, without specific details. Beijing also has leverage with its dominance over rare earths, critical materials for the American industry, after having forced Washington to back down on its customs rights last year. On the human level, the son of Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy magnate imprisoned in Hong Kong, called on Xi from Washington to release his 78-year-old father — a request deemed unrealistic by Trump in May. Beijing, on the other hand, had released the founder of an underground church, Ezra Jin, after an intervention by Trump.
