DOMINANT ANGLE
Helsinki is analyzing the Panamanian earthquake through the lens of seismic risk: corrected magnitude, geography of the tsunami alert, and rarity of the phenomenon, more than the human toll.
Dominant angle identified — does not reflect unanimity of this country’s media
KEY POINTS
- 01
Yle, HS, and Iltalehti report a magnitude of 7.6 according to the USGS, MTV 7.7; the USGS had initially announced 8.
- 02
Yle: power outages in at least six provinces, according to Naturgy; airport and two subway lines interrupted as a precaution.
- 03

ANALYSIS
Helsinki, October 10, 2026. The Finnish press is treating the earthquake of Friday, October 9, as a continuously updated agency dispatch, backed by the USGS. Yle, Helsingin Sanomat, Iltalehti, and MTV Uutiset locate the epicenter near Pitaloza Arriba, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, and rely on Reuters, AFP, and AP.
The figures vary from one title to another. Yle, HS, and Iltalehti report a magnitude of 7.6, while MTV reports 7.7. Yle and Iltalehti recall that the USGS initially announced 8 before correcting. Iltalehti specifies that the shock was recorded at 19:56, Finnish time; HS situates it "Friday evening, Finnish time" and judges it "very strong".
The tsunami aspect occupies a central place. Yle lists the coasts targeted by the American alert center: Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, as well as Hawaii, and notes that the Chilean hydrographic institute issued its own alert. HS indicates that the warning was later lifted, according to Reuters.
The damage is described with restraint. Yle quotes the electricity company Naturgy: the power is cut in at least six provinces; Panamanian television shows residents leaving buildings; the international airport and two metro lines in the capital are interrupted as a precaution. HS mentions damaged or collapsed buildings in Penonomé and Chitré, and emphasizes that the capital, more than 200 kilometers from the epicenter, experienced panic although earthquakes are rare there. MTV recalls that such earthquakes are "rare" in Panama and that the canal functioned normally.
The human toll remains outside the scope: HS writes that there is "for the time being" no information on potential casualties. The four texts, published in the first hours, do not mention President Mulino or the organization of relief efforts; the dominant reading is that of seismic risk and alert mechanics. Yle adds that the earthquake was also felt in Costa Rica and Colombia, according to witnesses and local media, and that many aftershocks have been reported, the strongest reaching 6; its article, signed with the mention "Reuters, AFP, AP", remains in the process of being updated.
