ANALYSIS
Dacca, 23 October 2026. The Daily Star and The Business Standard (TBS) report on the earthquake that struck northern Tibet on Thursday, 22 October at 22:33 local time (14:33 GMT), immediately citing the source of the toll: Chinese state media.
According to The Daily Star, which quotes these media outlets citing local authorities, "a strong earthquake killed at least 16 people and injured 46" in this "remote" Chinese region. CCTV television reports that 11 of the injured are in critical condition and that 339 houses have collapsed or been damaged. The Xinhua agency indicates that officials are still assessing the damage and that rescue operations are ongoing.
The newspaper locates the epicentre in a mountainous area approximately 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), at a depth of around 10 kilometres. The Maru township in Baqen county is designated as the epicentre. The vice-head of the township, Lhawang Dagpo, told Xinhua that the shock was strongly felt and that the walls of the township government building cracked. Electricity and telecommunications were disrupted in the county seat.
The rescue operation is described by Xinhua: over 300 police officers were dispatched, and 347 regional firefighters and rescuers were mobilized. A level III emergency response was activated, according to CCTV, whose images show employees fleeing restaurants, objects falling from supermarket shelves, and rescuers making their way through buildings with collapsed roofs.
TBS, more brief, sticks to the data from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC): magnitude 7, epicentre in a high-altitude county of Nagqu, at a depth of 10 kilometres, the average altitude within a 5-kilometre radius reaching approximately 4,864 metres. It locates the epicentre about 400 kilometres from Lhasa.
Both articles note the limited nature of the information: the figures come from Chinese official sources, and the toll is presented as provisional. The Daily Star adds that earthquakes are relatively common in China, without further developing the regional context.
