ANALYSIS
Paris, October 23, 2026. The French press is treating the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Tibet on Thursday, October 22, as a wire report, entirely based on the official Chinese news agency Xinhua's releases, which cite local authorities.
The toll is given right from the start in the headlines. BFMTV announces "16 dead and 32 injured"; Le Monde writes that the earthquake "has killed at least 16 people and injured dozens". Both media outlets specify that more than 300 houses have collapsed and that "the authorities are assessing the damage", while "rescue operations are ongoing", according to Xinhua. Sud Ouest, whose text is briefer, repeats the first alert from the agency: victims are reported, but "no figure" has been given at this stage.
The location is the subject of particular attention, with the time reported in the Paris time zone: the shock occurred at 22:33 local time, or 16:33 in Paris. The epicenter is located about 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagchu and 390 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, in the Maru canton, Baqen district, Le Monde specifies. BFMTV describes a mountainous region.
The damage described remains that reported by Xinhua. The deputy head of the canton, Lhawang Dagpo, said the shock was clearly felt in the canton offices, where cracks appeared in the walls. The electricity and telecommunications services were disrupted in the district capital; employees were sent to the scene to coordinate the response and local officials were checking the situation in the surrounding villages.
The two most detailed articles put the event into recent seismic history by recalling that "earthquakes are frequent in the region". In January 2025, at least 126 people had been killed in a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Tingri canton, not far from the Sino-Nepalese border.
The texts contain no testimony from survivors, no images from the field, or international reaction: the French coverage remains at this stage that of an event known only through official Chinese channels, without direct access to the affected area.
