ANALYSIS
Katmandou, 23 October 2026. Nepalese media are reporting on the magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred on Thursday at 22:33 local time in Baqen County, Nagqu City, in northern Tibet, mainly through Xinhua and Reuters dispatches. The Kathmandu Post, quoting Reuters, describes a "sparsely populated" high-altitude area, about 400 km from Lhasa, where the average altitude within a 5 km radius of the epicenter reaches 4,864 meters, at a depth of 10 km, according to the Chinese Seismological Center.
The toll varies from one title to another depending on the time of the source. Khabarhub, citing the local emergency management office, reports 16 dead and 32 injured, including 11 seriously injured, and more than 300 houses collapsed at 2:25 am on Friday. The Rising Nepal, which publishes a Xinhua dispatch dated October 23, updates to 16 dead and 76 injured at 1:00 pm on Friday, according to a press conference by the Nagqu municipal government.
The relief effort takes center stage. Khabarhub reports more than 300 police officers mobilized and 347 regional firefighters and rescuers deployed. The dispatch relayed by The Rising Nepal mentions more than 5,000 people on the ground, an emergency command post set up on the front line, continuous monitoring of slopes, reservoirs, and power plants, as well as the repair of damaged telecommunications and power networks. Police and transportation have inspected more than 1,700 kilometers of roads, 201 bridges, and 324 buses, and cleared debris from seven sections. The Chinese Red Cross has dispatched a team and allocated 3,800 sets of supplies, including family kits, hygiene kits, and heating equipment.
The Kathmandu Post adds details from the field: at least two injured people found in a village near the epicenter, cracks in houses, residents taking shelter outside or in their cars, and a series of aftershocks of magnitude 3 to 4. It presents the earthquake as the strongest in China since January 2024 and recalls the 2010 earthquake in Yushu, with a magnitude of 7.1, in the neighboring province of Qinghai.
The articles contain no reaction from the Nepalese government and no mention of a direct impact on Nepal, despite being a neighbor of the affected Himalayan region. The tone remains factual and focused on the relief effort announced by the Chinese authorities.
