ANALYSIS
Belgrade, October 23, 2026. Serbian coverage of the magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred in Tibet is limited to two short articles, published by N1 Serbia and Blic, the latter reproducing a dispatch from the Tanjug agency. The tone is that of an immediate assessment: no editorials, no political perspective.
N1 reports on "16 dead" and "hundreds of houses destroyed". The site indicates that the tremor occurred at 22:33 local time, that the epicenter is located 191 kilometers northeast of Nagqu, a "sparsely populated" area situated at high altitude, about 300 kilometers from Lhasa. The earthquake, at a depth of about 18 kilometers, would be the strongest in the Tibetan Plateau region in five years, according to the Chinese public service CCTV. The local press office has recorded 339 houses collapsed in the city, where rescue and search operations "are underway". Among the injured, 11 people are in a serious condition. Rescue teams are setting up tents to house residents whose homes have collapsed.
Blic, via Tanjug, provides a slightly different assessment: at least 16 dead and 54 injured, as reported by Chinese state media. The dispatch specifies that the authorities have declared a state of emergency and deployed rescue teams, that China has activated level 3 of its response to geological disasters, according to China Daily, and that more than 1,600 people from the local district are mobilized, according to the Guardian. More than 300 houses have collapsed and a large part of the affected area is without electricity.
The two articles diverge on certain factual points: the number of injured (32 in N1, 54 in Blic), the distance to Lhasa (about 300 versus about 400 kilometers), the depth (18 versus 10 kilometers) and the historical comparison. Blic writes that it is the strongest earthquake in China since January 2024, while N1 reproduces CCTV's formula of five years in the region. Blic also locates the epicenter in the "southwest" of Tibet, while naming the Nagqu district in the north.
The articles do not mention Xi Jinping's instructions, the aid of 50 million yuan, the landslides on National Highway 317, or the Tingri earthquake of January 2025. No official Serbian reaction is included.
