ANALYSIS
Lima, October 23, 2026. The Peruvian press reports on the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Tibet on Thursday, October 22 at 22:33 local time, or 9:33 in Lima according to RPP Noticias. The provisional toll is at least 16 dead. RPP, citing Xinhua, reports 54 injured, including at least 11 seriously; Andina and El Comercio, which pick up an AFP dispatch, count 32 in their first version. More than 300 homes have collapsed or are severely damaged.
The three media outlets locate the epicenter in the canton of Maru, Baqen district, at a depth of about ten kilometers. The USGS places it about 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu. RPP specifies that the area, at 4,800 meters above sea level, is a zone of high seismic activity on the Tibetan plateau, and that rescue teams are working despite aftershocks and low temperatures.
Regarding the damage, the accounts are based on the Chinese official agency. In Maru, 70 kilometers from the district capital, residential houses have collapsed; the district administrative headquarters has lost all electricity and telecommunications. The vice-governor of the canton, Lhawang Dagpo, cited by Xinhua via AFP, indicates that the shock was felt in local offices and cracked certain buildings. The authorities, the dispatch specifies, are assessing the damage and continuing rescue operations, announced again on Friday, October 23.
RPP relays the instructions of President Xi Jinping, who has asked to "concentrate efforts" to safeguard the population's lives. The articles in the corpus do not detail the amount of emergency aid, the state of the roads, or the situation of the trains.
The historical reminder comes from the AFP dispatch: "earthquakes are relatively frequent in China", and in January 2025, at least 126 people died in the earthquake in the rural district of Tingri, Tibet. The Peruvian treatment remains factual: figures, rescue efforts, weather conditions, and comparison with 2025, without political commentary or questioning of the Chinese authorities.
