Before the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump presented as his own the decision to "annihilate" Iran, a phrase picked up by Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet: "Ska jag förinta Iran?" The president posed the alternative in these terms, cited by the two newspapers: "Kommer en överenskommelse att göras med Iran som låter dem återuppbygga och skapa ett mycket större land än det någonsin varit tidigare? Eller ska jag förinta den Islamiska Republiken och göra det snabbt?" — an agreement that would allow Tehran to rebuild, or the rapid annihilation of the Islamic Republic.
The Swedish press highlights the discrepancy between this martial tone and the situation on the ground: the Strait of Ormuz, vital for global trade, remains blocked, energy prices remain high, and peace negotiations are at a standstill. Trump nonetheless affirmed that an agreement with Iran could be concluded after the mellanårsval, the midterm election in November.
